The vision of the San Carlos Apache Tribe is to be self -sufficient and in control of our future while practicing spiritual, physical, emotional, mental and social well-being.

Leadership

David Reede

Executive Director

Mr. David Reede is a member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe (SCAT). He has been the Executive Director for the SCAT Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) since 2016 and oversees 16 programs, which have been recognized by the National Indian Health Board with the Local Impact Award.

In the past, his role in the community included being the original Executive Chair for the San Carlos Apache Healthcare Corporation Board of Directors and Wellness Center Director.  He also served as Gilson Wash Councilman in 2004 and tribal Vice Chairman in 2006. During the COVID-19 pandemic he was appointed as the Incident Commander. His contribution to Tribal healthcare body of knowledge include co-publishing 2 articles in the Public Health Report.

Mr. Reede obtained his B.A. in Education from Northern Arizona University and Liberal Studies from Eastern Arizona College. He is a 2005 IHS Healthy Native Communities Fellowship Graduate and obtained his Basic Police Officers Training/Criminal Justice from Central Arizona College.

 

 

 

 Mr. Reede is an active member of the following:

  • San Carlos Unified District School Board.
  • 3-time appointee -Tribal Technical Advisory Group (TTAG) to Centers for Medicaid Medicare Services.
  • Arizona Advisory Council on Indian Healthcare for Phoenix area with the Indian Health Service.
  • Salton L. Reede Sr. Memorial Fund, Board and founder.

Mr. Reede’s passion is in assisting with local community efforts and conducting events held in his community. One such event is an annual basketball tournament held in honor of his late father who served with the U.S. Coast Guard.  This is held during the Annual Veteran Day Celebration.  His dad designed the San Carlos Apache tribal seal, and was also a strong education supporter. 

Mr. Reede’s professional & civic affiliations/accomplishments include the following:

  • Board Member Tribal Technical Advisor Group (TTAG) to Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services, representing the Phoenix Area IHS region, (2007-2010).
  • Board Member Behavioral Health Advisory Board with Indian Health Service for Phoenix Area IHS region, (2008—2010).
  • Committee Member Regional Advisory Group with Region Nine Environmental Protection Agency, for Central Arizona Region, (2008-2010).
  • Vice President of Board and Member of First Things First Regional Council, (2008-2010).
  • Member of Eastern Arizona Regional Advisory Council, Homeland Security,
  • Member nominee to the Mental Health Board of America, Alexandria Virginia
  • Board Member Con Alma Health Foundation, Sante Fe NM (2011-2012)
  • Board Member with Cobra Valley Institute of Technology, Globe Arizona (2012-2014)
  • Director-San Carlos Training Institute-(2012-2016)
  • Board member Governor’s Office on Arizona Parents Commission on Drug Education and Prevention. (2018)
  • Board Member Healthy Native Community Partnership, Chairman with Board of Directors. HNCP Ins., Shiprock NM (2008), Non-Profit
  • Board Member, non-Profit Nalwoodi Denzhone: Strength and Beauty Community (NDC), San Carlos Arizona (2013-2021).

 All these professional experiences have helped Mr. Reede to identify his continued need for professional growth in order to improve lives of his people.  Serving his community is his desire, and therefore, plans to use his knowledge and experiences to educate and advance the healthcare for the Apache people as well as all Native people. His experiences have also taught him to enjoy the ride, and always have a vision for future growth. 

Dr. Natsai Chidavaenzi holds a Ph. D from Walden University in Health Services specializing in Community Health and Education.  She first came to the San Carlos Apache Tribe (SCAT) community in 2015 as a Family Nurse Practitioner at the San Carlos Apache Health Corp. She has been serving as the SCAT Deputy Director of Department of Health and Human Services (SCAT-DHHS) since 2017.

In this capacity, she is an integral part of overseeing the Public Health Nursing and Tracers, of which she co-authored two COVID-19 related articles published in the of in the Public Health Report. She has also contributed in developing and expanding prevention services within the 16 DHHS programs, which have been recognized and awarded a Local Impact Award by NIHB. Dr. Chidavaenzi’s efforts in the San Carlos Apache community include but not limited to providing healthcare services to San Carlos inmates within the detention center, as well as establishing a Sober Living House for the community.

Dr. Natsai Chidavaenzi Ph.D, MSN, FNP-BC, BA

Deputy Director

Dr. Chidavaenzi obtained her ASN, BSN and MSN specializing in Family Nurse Practitioner from Tennessee State University (TSU). Before that she got her Bachelor’s in Biology from Wittenberg University, OH and Legal Nurse Consultant Diploma from Kaplan University. She has over 30 years of healthcare experience in serving cultural and age diverse populations in critical, ambulatory, and public health care settings. She also co-owned a family clinic in Tennessee. Dr. Chidavaenzi was an Adjunct Professor at University of Phoenix for 4 years and currently serves as a dissertation Content Expert at Grand Canyon University.

Dr. Chidavaenzi’s passion lies in community outreach within the underserved populations, providing health awareness, health promotion and maintenance as well as disease prevention presentations on variety of platforms. She also sat and continues to sit on several education and non-profit Boards, of which she is a Project Director for Women of Dominion non-profit org that aids People with Albinism in Zimbabwe since 2011. She has also authored and published over 10 articles and books.

Some of her personal achievements include being 2006 Vanderbilt University Medical Center recognized nurse, guest speaker at TSU MSN graduation Leadership Seminar, awarded the Master’s scholarly project and presenting the project paper at the World Social Science Association conference.

Dr. Chidavaenzi has been in the San Carlos Apache community since 2015. Originating from Zimbabwe, the Apache people, culture and picturesque surroundings makes her feel at home.
