Epidemiology and Public Health Emergency Preparedness (Epi-PHEP) Program

The San Carlos Apache Tribe's (SCAT) Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) Epidemiology goal is to improve the health and well-being of SCAT community members.

The Public Health Emergency Preparedness will strengthen and sustain the SCAT communities’ abilities to prevent, protect against, mitigate the effects of, respond to, and recover from incidents with negative health effects.

Definition

The study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in specified populations, and the application of the study for the prevention and control of health problems”

-As defined by John M. Last (1988)

Distribution

  • Frequency – collect data on the number of cases of a health condition in the population but also on the relationship of the number to the size of the population. The resulting rate allows epidemiologists to compare disease occurrence across different populations.
  • Pattern -the occurrence of health-related events by time, place, and person.
